This is a wonderful profile on Professor Marci Hamilton, a real champion of human rights.
Marci appeared on The Aftermath and helped us a great deal. Through this we came to find out about her amazing organization, Child USA. Both Leah and I are Ambassadors for Child USA and I accepted Marci’s invitation to join the board. The work being done is helping victims across the United States. If you don’t know about it, read the article, check out the website, follow on social media and participate in any way you can to supporting Child USA. It is making a difference for victims of abuse.

Anyone interested in helping children who have been abused or neglected, please consider becoming a Guardian ad Litem.

Is it true that in order to become a GAL, one must first be an attorney? I’m not trying to be a “know-it-all”. But I wanted to know what “Guardian ad Litem” meant and so I Googled and found:
A guardian ad litem (“GAL”) is an attorney appointed by the court to investigate a case and report its findings and recommendations to the court.
Is that correct? Does one really first need to become an attorney? I’m asking because people who may be interested in becoming a GAL should know they must be an attorney — providing that’s true.
Kim says
No. However, the process is pretty daunting. I have tried and must admit I gave up in frustration. Sigh.
Arlene says
I worked as a court appointed GAL for a few years and a licensed attorney. The organization that trains non lawyers to be special advocates for children is called CASA which is a national organization. It stands for Court Appointed Special Advocates. It is similar to GAL, is a volunteer position and 30 hours of training is required and rigorous screening before working with a child. Volunteers are required to do an additional 12 hours of continued education each year. Each year, CASA trains more than 24,000 new people.
Kim says
That’s what I tried to sign up for. Thanks. It was quite a task. Maybe I will try again.

KEEP IN MIND THERE IS EMOTIONAL ABUSE AS WELL…..
WORDS CUT LIKE A KNIFE, THEY LEAVE SCARS THAT CAN”T BE SEEN WITH THE NAKED EYE…..
ANYONE WHO IS AWARE OF OR SUSPECTS EMOTIONAL ABUSE CAN REPORT THAT ALSO.

Thanks for pointing out this article. Very interesting!

I feel very ashamed to admit that I have never before even considered this problem.

A real champion of human rights indeed! Notice how Hamilton doesn’t shrilly generalise all Catholic priests or gymnastics teachers or psychiatrists as abusers. Instead she focuses on listening to the victims, helping them, and then getting the law changed to improve safe guarding, oversight, etc.

Excellent!

O/T. A follow-up to a story I posted a couple of days ago. As before, I believe that this is important. My ESMB Redux and Twitter links are set forth below.

Maybe that will be enough to piss him off and look into an IRS rollback on tax exemption.
