Please forgive the length of this post. It’s been a very long time since I’ve been out and this is my first public “I’m out” post. I owe a big thank you to Leah & Mike. Mike, I always liked you and really missed your friendly face after you disappeared. Your absence was when I started getting curious about where you and Ray and Gillaume were.
It was terrifying, but I left. I lost a lot. Eventually, I started taking my life back. I disposed of the meters, the books, the tapes, the CDs, the course packs, the certificates and anything else related to Scn that I could find. I re-built my life, worked on my self-respect, and my reclaimed my dignity. I’m not a bad person. In some areas, I might even be a little bit awesome sometimes. I’ve made mistakes. Some pretty big, a lot more that are small. Now, I’ve done the taboo things – looked on the net to see what others say about Scn, seen a therapist to help me heal from some Scn experiences, and dabbled in “other practices.”
I’m a past Scientologist and staff member at a Mission. I didn’t arrive in the Sea Org, despite signing a contract. Once signed, I proceeded to cry. A lot. I took that as a sign that I shouldn’t go, so I didn’t. I did, however, spend more years on staff.
When a health issue came up that caused me to be unable to fulfill my 40 hour/week paying job AND the 30+ hours/week at the Mission, they didn’t know what to do with me. Clearly they thought it was MY fault that I was ill. At that point, I believed it was my fault too. That’s what LRH said. I wanted to try to make things work so, I proposed several solutions to fulfilling my contract, but they were all shot down. I was to arrive on post on time and work the standard 30+ hours. A valid health concern was seen as absurd to staff (and to me at the time). Continuing a full Mission schedule was not possible. It was seen as my counter-intention and O/Ws (basically, Scn speak for misdeeds). This meant that my PTSness (Scn for being at the effect of something instead of being cause over it) and I needed to be handled. We tried interviews, sessions, and handling after handling. That wasn’t working. Auditing stopped working. The auditor couldn’t fly my ruds (Scn speak for finding out what’s upsetting a person and helping them feel better). My fault again.
So it was off to Flag for a case check. Who cares if my body and my wallet weren’t up to that? Obviously that was just my PTSness talking. While there, I was told I needed to buy about 10 intensives of auditing. It needed to be done at Flag and nowhere else, because I was apparently so messed up. Ummmm…no. I can’t pay the zillion $ for that, I’m sick, I’m still expected to be back on post in a couple days. I’m feeling crushed and trapped. So, I started to go home. Leaving Flag was a bit of a problem. The receptionist asked me a question and I started to cry. She was trained not to let anyone leave that wasn’t VGIs (Very Good Indicators = basically happy and smiling). So, she grabbed me and wouldn’t let me leave. After blowing smoke up a bunch of people’s butts, eventually, I was able to leave. My trip had simply wasted a couple (few, maybe?) thousand dollars. Unbelievably, I was still devout but knew something needed to change.
I got home, went back to the Msn and nothing is different, except now they’re cranky that I didn’t get “fixed” at Flag. I’m freaked at the (life-long) illness I was just diagnosed with, my church is pissed because I have it (like I needed to deal with that too?!), and I’m feeling lost and alone. So, what do I do? I can’t stay, because I’m not physically able to keep up anymore. I’m afraid if I leave staff that I will lose my paying job (and therefore my health insurance), all my friends, my entire social circle, my roommates, and my whole spiritual belief system. That’s a lot to lose, especially when you’re already really, really scared about being sick.
Many of the people I don’t blame for their actions. They were trying to do their job and save the world, just like I was. Some people were (and I imagine still are) pretty messed up from it. Some people were just a-holes and I can’t fix that. Karma will handle that sooner or later.
What I can do, is be there for people who are still in. I want to tell current Scns/Staff that it’s ok to look, talk and have your own point of view. I believe that you’re smart enough to figure out what is true and what is a lie. I hope you can believe that too. If I remember correctly, somewhere in the St Hat lectures, LRH talked about reading as many books as you an on a new subject to get a well rounded feel for the information. You are exposed to different viewpoints, different gradients, and different experiences. It may be taboo, but there’s a reference to support it. You deserve to see everything and THEN evaluate and decide what you think is true. I waited far, far too long to do that.
Please, believe in yourself enough to make your own decision whether to stay or leave. Nobody else’s opinion matters.
The experiences you went through match at least 1/3 of my friends who got involved with Scientology. You can’t do enough, give enough, or anything to stop Scientology from trying to suck the life out of you. Once out and back in control you’ll find that life is so much more appreciated and rich. But, we couldn’t see that when we were in the web.
The high control organisation takes away the ability of the victims to think for themselves. The words might be shiny, but the reality is the opposite – thought stopping and punishments (“ethics”).

I too have been in Sea Org many many years ago but have two types of cancer that appeared years later caused by Sea Org life. So we all form this amazing chain whereby the years fly along but we grow stronger in the conviction something is very very Wrong with Scientology. I knew some very dedicated members in the Sea Org, I was one. Until I realized the price a Scientologist pays for coloring outside the lines of in my day Ron now dm, coloring outside the lines of Policy. One might think the “leader of the gang NOT made for you & me”….would be demanding that any & ALL members sign the damn petition, wouldn’t you? Internet petitions/voting are not reliable. It’s how that British research ship wound up having the name “Boaty McBoatface” picked for it, which I think is cute. Any petition that cannot be audited or have the signatures verified, such as by the provision of personally identifying information like a driver’s license number, should be ignored

However, one can comment on a petition and not sign, and vice versa. It’s also possible to comment more than once. And some Bunkeroos, such as myself, have signed (LOL, sorry Mike) the Aftermath petition to be able to spread entheta. (At that moment we hadn’t figured out how to comment without signing.)

It’s honestly not the content of any blog, documentary or tv show that shapes my opinion of Scientology. It’s their response that informs me of who they are and what they’re about. I wrote this letter after watching the season 2 premiere. I’d like to send it to the CoS and their celebrities but I’ll at least share it here.
To the Church of Scientology
As a neutral observer who knows little of Scientology or mike and Leah, I find your response to their claims horrifying. It is as bad or worse as the catholic church’s response to their own allegations of abuse. Pointing this out is not religious bigotry. This is about truth and justice for people who suffer the most vile of violations: sexual abuse of children.
Your response and actions should have been “we take claims of sexual abuse very seriously. We plan on cooperating fully with law enforcement and will be conducting our own extensive investigation into the matter.”
Anything less than that is an effrontery to your community and humanity as a whole.

EXACTLY! That’s the LEAST that they should have said, followed up with an honest offer of help for those two young ladies. Even if they preferred to handle the matter internally with their own justice system (like concentrating on a health-care approach and a community-safety approach as opposed to a punitive approach- which I prefer) as most churches would want to do, it wouldn’t have backfired on them as it did.
These kind of abusive situations can happen at any place and at any group. It is what they group does to deal with it responsibly for the welfare of all parties involved, that makes thee difference. The CofS approached this in a very irresponsible way. They should have issued a public apology to those two ladies even if that apology wasn’t an admission of guilt as such, but more like a “We are here for you” kind of statement.

I hear you, Peter Nortom, but I never lose faith that people can change their ways if approached in the right manner. I am more inclined towards reformation and rehabilitation than towards punitive handlings, and that’s the way that I will approach these things with them. I am interested in reuniting families, not in destroying the church.
As always, Mike and Leah are all over it. Time to take this to the the “Finish Line” I still have one question. Every discussion re: Sea Org member or just a follower, how do these families and Scientology get around the “strict” education and schooling for those under 18? Do they have a boat load of ” adults home schooling all the children. I cannot believe this situation. The word is each member commits 10-14 hrs a day just studying Scientology. Why are the local and state officials not looking into this?

You have gone through so much & being diagnosed with a life long illness after Scientology is no Fun. I too have been in Sea Org many many years ago but have two types of cancer that appeared years later caused by Sea Org life. So we all form this amazing chain whereby the years fly along but we grow stronger in the conviction something is very very Wrong with Scientology. I knew some very dedicated members in the Sea Org, I was one. Until I realized the price a Scientologist pays for coloring outside the lines of in my day Ron now dm, coloring outside the lines of Policy. I am saddened to hear you were treated so terribly! In any other Church parish members would bring you a meal, call and check up on you, offer a ride to Drs Appointments, or slipped you cash to help w bills! The culture within Scientology is so Damaging!

I find it quite interesting that “the organization” is encouraging it’s loyalist to sign their petition to “remove Leah & Mike’s A & E Aftermath Series” from TV.
One might think the “leader of the gang NOT made for you & me”….would be demanding that any & ALL members sign the damn petition, wouldn’t you? I mean after all, IF there are Millions joining everyday, Mega Millions of current members….wouldn’t he demand they come OUT in droves to sign this petition?

Internet petitions/voting are not reliable. It’s how that British research ship wound up having the name “Boaty McBoatface” picked for it, which I think is cute. Any petition that cannot be audited or have the signatures verified, such as by the provision of personally identifying information like a driver’s license number, should be ignored

The size of UDR (Under the Radar) Scientologist public is rapidly growing, that’s for sure. When a cult convinces it’s members that it is above the law of the land, (which LRH instructed his followers to do when they attack critics) then it is time for our secular government to step in to protect it’s citizens from this cult.

Aftermath is so going shut off the flow of any new meat into Clamtown. As RB says, not even the faithful minions will put up with sea org life. Eventually, even Eastern Europe and Africa are going to know the truth. I have few hopes for Taiwan, the language barrier is a big hurdle there.

AFAICT it is not possible to download that. Maybe the one who started a petition can do so.
Over on the Underground Bunker yesterday “John P Capitalist” said he had downloaded the full comment list for the petition to ban Aftermath started by some kid.
However, one can comment on a petition and not sign, and vice versa. It’s also possible to comment more than once. And some Bunkeroos, such as myself, have signed (LOL, sorry Mike) the Aftermath petition to be able to spread entheta. (At that moment we hadn’t figured out how to comment without signing.)
Which in fact was a lot of fun. A guy named L. Con Blubbard signed, I put up the link to the big list quite a few times, and even someone posting as “David Miscavige” chimed in to post and tell about the Leah McPherson case.

It’s honestly not the content of any blog, documentary or tv show that shapes my opinion of Scientology. It’s their response that informs me of who they are and what they’re about. I wrote this letter after watching the season 2 premiere. I’d like to send it to the CoS and their celebrities but I’ll at least share it here.
To the Church of Scientology
As a neutral observer who knows little of Scientology or mike and Leah, I find your response to their claims horrifying. It is as bad or worse as the catholic church’s response to their own allegations of abuse. Pointing this out is not religious bigotry. This is about truth and justice for people who suffer the most vile of violations: sexual abuse of children.
Your response and actions should have been “we take claims of sexual abuse very seriously. We plan on cooperating fully with law enforcement and will be conducting our own extensive investigation into the matter.”
Anything less than that is an effrontery to your community and humanity as a whole.
(Following is a quote from a post I saw on Twitter) “The fact that Saina didn’t tell her friend means absolutely nothing. According to well documented statistics on childhood sexual abuse (London, Brick et al, 2003; Ullman, 2007), it’s estimated that only about 38% of victims disclose the incident(s) to anyone, and of those that do, even fewer are actually reported to the proper authorities. Some never disclose at all, ever.”

EXACTLY! That’s the LEAST that they should have said, followed up with an honest offer of help for those two young ladies. Even if they preferred to handle the matter internally with their own justice system (like concentrating on a health-care approach and a community-safety approach as opposed to a punitive approach- which I prefer) as most churches would want to do, it wouldn’t have backfired on them as it did.
These kind of abusive situations can happen at any place and at any group. It is what they group does to deal with it responsibly for the welfare of all parties involved, that makes thee difference. The CofS approached this in a very irresponsible way. They should have issued a public apology to those two ladies even if that apology wasn’t an admission of guilt as such, but more like a “We are here for you” kind of statement.
DM REALLY needs some serious change of PR advisor!! And a heart would be a good idea as well!

I hear you, Peter Nortom, but I never lose faith that people can change their ways if approached in the right manner. I am more inclined towards reformation and rehabilitation than towards punitive handlings, and that’s the way that I will approach these things with them. I am interested in reuniting families, not in destroying the church.
As always, Mike and Leah are all over it. Time to take this to the the “Finish Line” I still have one question. Every discussion re: Sea Org member or just a follower, how do these families and Scientology get around the “strict” education and schooling for those under 18? Do they have a boat load of ” adults home schooling all the children. I cannot believe this situation. The word is each member commits 10-14 hrs a day just studying Scientology. Why are the local and state officials not looking into this?
