I don’t know where you got the idea that “If someone does evil to you Its [not] because you were going to do evil to them first”, “as described by Ron”. Now where is this passage by Ron then? There is nowhere in Scientology that states that. In fact Hubbard explicitly states that Karma or the Overt-Motivator Sequence doesn’t really exist, it is only a specious agreement – there is no fact or “natural law” behind such. Of course if you agree to it then there goes the old ball game. When you ascribe something to Hubbard please try to be correct about it.
Foolproof, just because a Scientology definition or concept such as “withholds” may overlap with legitimate real-world phenomenon, doesn’t mean that it is a legitimate definition or application itself. People may, for instance, have traumatic memories that affect them – but that doesn’t mean that they are “engrams,” a concept Hubbard used (like most everything, significantly plagiarized, without due credit, from earlier ideas) that has been scientifically debunked.
One of Hubbard’s tricks was to expand or change the accepted meaning of words. Early on, he even admitted it is a tool of manipulation and control – see what he wrote about “redefinition of words,” such as:
“A long term propaganda technique used by socialists (Communists and Nazis alike) is of interest to PR practitioners.”
PeaceMaker, witholds exist. Its a valid concept. Its perhaps the Scientlology lingo that upsets you.
Example: I have my own business plus a 2nd job wherein I work for someone doing admin like filing, answering phones, and other Gal Friday type work.
My own business has been really busy for the past few months and the filing in my salaried 2nd job has suffered. Meaning,I had ‘t done ANY of it. I really let it go. My salaried job boss is a very trusting, non-helicopter type. He trusts me to get things done.
I appreciate that trust but since late September I’d let the filing go because I was so busy in my own business, which, by the way, benefited him, but that’s beside the point.
The other day a certain document was needed by him Urgently. He charged to the file where it was supposed to be and of course it wasn’t there..
He blew up. He needed it IMMEDIATELY., really needed it. I knew why he needed it and didn’t blame him at all for being upset..
I professed to not know where it was but I knew damned well where it was – in a BAG I had hidden way under my desk so that I could keep it out of sight whilst I PRE-sorted it so that I could properly file AFTER HOURS.
But I didn’t want him to yell at me and worry, or, God forbid, see this large bag of papers – I mean, no way! and since I KNEW where this doc HAD TO BE i waited until he stormed across the hall to his office and proceeded to surrepticiously go thru thru this bag of diverse “to be filed” dox, found what he needed and brought it over to him and told him it had been “misfiled” which was of course a lie because it hadn’t been filed at all…
He was quite happy and relieved to get it and thanked me, and I thanked God and the angel over my shoulder that had given me this REPRIEVE and this WARNING to get the hell going on the filing back log…
THAT, PeaceMaker, is a WITHOLD 🙂 Call, it whatever you like 🙂
And, PS: its Saturday night, and guess what I’m doing?
Very good.
And guess what I’ll be doing tomorrow until its done? 🙂
Another PS: Some day I’ll tell him the truth. It will be safe someday. He pays me a salary but we’re also long time business acquaintances and friends, too. So some day I’ll be able to tell him what I did and why, ,and I know him, he’ll laugh. Like me, he doesn’t hold onto things. We’ll both laugh about it. But that’s in the future. Not yet 🙂 Certainly not before I get this filing done. And to that end, good night everyone 🙂

I get the analogy. However, I can’t see how your particular situation at work is similar to so-called “withholds” in $cientology.
Aren’t $cientology-type “withholds” supposed to be centered around the assumption that a person first committed an “overt” (something supposedly very bad) and is subsequently hiding it (withholding it)? Isn’t a withhold supposed to be some kind of transgression against a moral code?
And don’t $cientologists believe that people who do these things are bad people or have “crimes” or can’t be trusted…or some such nonsense?
Clearly, you did what you did at work because you were overwhelmed with other work, not because you wanted to hide anything or because you first committed a “bad act”. It’s not like you were trying to cover up some sinister act or trying to deceive anyone. Is that not accurate?
Aquamarinesays
KatherineINCali,
A withold is just something a person DID that HE o rSHE thinks, believes or knows was wrong,or harmful to someone or something,(called in Scientology an “overt act” ) that this person is hiding, not revealing.
A withold is not itself an overt.
A person can commit an overt and reveal it. That’s not a withold.
An overt becomes a withold by a person’s not revealing the truth about having done the overt.
Now, you said, “Clearly, you did what you did at work because you were overwhelmed with other work, not because you wanted to hide anything or because you first committed a ‘bad act'”.
See, that’s true. And its also not true. I have been really busy with my own business. On the other hand, there were any number of nights in the past several months when I could have been catching up on the filing wherein I was instead doing something else…like posting on this blog 🙂
So, its Mike Rinder’s fault, really, for getting me addicted…:)
Ha Ha, Mike, Ok, to continue:
There are DEGREES of seriousness with regard to overts and withholds. Some are more serious than others.
And by the way these are just NAMES for things. Don’t get caught up in what things are CALLED. The name is not the thing.
What I did was not that serious because I was LUCKY.
But it could have been serious.
He needed that document to prove that he had done something mandated by the government, which, if he couldn’t prove it, would have cost him money.
If I hadn’t been here to give him the doc that wasn’t in the file he would have been wrongfully inconvenienced and unfairly penalized by the government AND fined, all because he needed a document he rightly expected to be in the file.
If any of this had happened, i would have felt AWFUL.
But it didn’t. I was lucky. And I’m GRATEFUL.
Which is why I’m still in the office freaking filing at midnite on a Saturday nite 🙂
Hope this helps 🙂

Everybody should calm down. The phrase from Shakespeare’s Hamlet spoken by Queen Gertrude, “The lady doth protest too much, methinks”. She’s just viewed a play staged by her son Hamlet in which a queen resembling herself whose husband the king has just been slain is protesting how much she loves him and will always love him and how she’ll never ever marry again, which is what Queen Gertrude did immediately after her first husband, Hamlet’s father, died. Hamlet suspects his mother and step father of having killed his father. He puts on this play to purposely stimulate what he feels sure are the guilty consciences of his mother and step father. His idea is to make them both very uncomfortable while watching this play.
This line is almost always misquoted, as “methinks the lady doth protest too much” suggesting that she is strongly denying something & hiding the truth. That is not the case in the play. The queen is saying that the Queen in the play is simply being too effusive.
I seem to remember you as being the leading lady in Macbeth! No, I was just in the audience after I landed my space ship on the Thames on a night off from race car driving on Marcab. Honest injun!
I remember the audience though throwing rotten fruit and tomatoes at the trumpet player- he was constantly sounding bum notes!
You said, ” No, I was just in the audience after I landed my space ship on the Thames on a night off from race car driving on Marcab. Honest injun! ”

Mike, sorry. After entering the above replies I will try and stick to the discussions on purely technical stuff and ignore the insults to Hubbard etc., if you will allow me to do so. (But the reply on “withholds don’t exist” is (now) a technical comment, but as I say I will resist the urge to counter like with like, otherwise.)
Not enough holiday time perhaps, it affects people differently. Life at times is slipping sideways from this blog and is being replaced with something meaningless by some being so focused on avoiding the use of manners. It’d be nice if honey were preferred to vinegar sometimes. Just sayin’.
Haha! True Yawn, but sometimes I get fed up with being sprayed, nay, hosed, with vinegar, purely because it is “Foolproof” that is posting something although what then do I expect with some of my pro-Scientology remarks being thrown in to a forum where many are anti-Scientology – and they may or may not have good reasons to be anti-Scientology, which I also grant. I must work on my own originations and make them more honey-like (although then am I not being 1.1? Another haha!)
Some will never stop wearing it, unfortunately. Quite sad.

I realize you think Hubbard was some great person who came up with valuable contributions.
Having said that, how is it that you can’t seem to understand — or simply don’t like — why so many ex-Scientologists and critics insult him?
Mountains of evidence prove he was a pathological liar, a bigamist, a criminal, an abuser, self-absorbed in the worst way, obsessed with power and money, a con artist …etc, etc, etc.
Doesn’t it seem even a little logical that people would insult him based upon the overwhelming evidence of his character and actions?
Because you are criticizing the man and perhaps hoping thereby to denigrate the technology that he invented, which works a treat and helps people. There is this assumption that Hubbard came into this life and started off in 1949 as an angel or as an OT – but he was a human being who picked his nose and went to the toilet and didn’t clean his teeth and had several marriages etc. etc. etc., but who then went about discovering or observing life and then inventing processes that made life more livable for others. Many of your comments are generalities and assumptions, as well. But why are you here? Why is Hubbard the target of your venom and insults? Why not say, Trump or Mugabe? That is the question you must answer – for yourself.
As to any aspersions as to the technology I usually find that people’s statements are based on their complete misunderstanding of that which they are complaining about, or have read someone else stating whatever it is and simply repeating it. Nearly every post I make is more or less to do with this factor.
There is nothing I would like better than if most of the complaints on here about what the Church has undertaken administratively, had not occurred and I mostly am in full agreement about such complaints – things such as donations, harsh ethics, reg rip-offs etc. If the Church had concentrated on delivering its services purely then all would have been fine, or better anyway.
You said, “Because you are criticizing the man and perhaps hoping thereby to denigrate the technology that he invented, which works a treat and helps people. ”

If you were referring to the “E-Meter”, which was invented in the 1940’s . . .Hubbard DID NOT invent it . . .
QUOTE : ” According to Hubbard’s son Ronald: “My father obtained the rights to the E-meter in1952 from Volney Mathison in the same manner that he does everything – through fraud and coercion.” END QUOTE:
Again, this is nonsense and you have bent the facts to suit your cloth. No one has ever said Hubbard invented the Wheatstone Bridge. But did anyone ever interpret the readings of this particular type of Wheatstone Bridge, producing books and courses etc. as to how it could be used to interpret what goes on in a person’s mind when used by a trained auditor. Where are all these explanations from other sources than Hubbard – they don’t exist do they? Get your facts right before you spout your stuff.

I’m trying to work out what, if any, aspects of scientology you apply here, in your written comm? You appeared to agree, at least in part, that perhaps you weren’t setting a good example of a peaceful, spiritually enlightening brand of scientology, yet 1) you persist with these puerile challenges/putdowns, 2) you don’t answer questions, and 3) you disregard key scn teaching.
Aquamarine says

Aquamarine says

Time to pass out the “Chill Pills”, so we can all get back to destroying Scientology in the most efficacious manner possible !

Laughter!
Wynski says
This line is almost always misquoted, as “methinks the lady doth protest too much” suggesting that she is strongly denying something & hiding the truth. That is not the case in the play. The queen is saying that the Queen in the play is simply being too effusive.
Aquamarine says
That’s right! She says the character is being too effuse in her repeated assertions of love for her dead husband.
Wynski says
Yes, it has NOTHING to do with “withholds”.

“Will” Shakespeare, is it? Did you hang with him at the Globe in one of your past lives?

Do you really think you hung out with Shakespeare in a past life or was that a joke?

I seem to remember you as being the leading lady in Macbeth! No, I was just in the audience after I landed my space ship on the Thames on a night off from race car driving on Marcab. Honest injun!
I remember the audience though throwing rotten fruit and tomatoes at the trumpet player- he was constantly sounding bum notes!

Foolproof says

OK, whatever… This seems like such a strange place to wear the double triangle.

This is a sincere question.
Foolproof says

Foolproof says

Do you seriously believe you are a good advert for scientology?
