And this is their write-up. Just sad on so many levels. Not the least of which is that the IAS is so proud of this they turned it into a promo piece so everyone could share this amazing success.
OMG we just did Patron with Honours.
Back story: applied for a loan, loan disapproved, banker says after a couple of impossible solutions, by the way there is a credit card on file here from a long time ago that’s never been activated for the exact amount you are asking for. I had no idea I even had this card. If I get a card like this I usually bin it. We don’t use CCs. To make the cycle happen before Thursday 2pm and it’s now 15 mins before shut off point, I had to activate the card then locate the card for the ccv number. I just thought about where I might have put this and I went straight to it. I’d put it with other similar items. Now the card could be run by IAS office AOSH ANZO. The card was declined so I called the bank and the security Falcon had stopped it as they thought it was a suspicious transaction. He said it would take another 20-30 minutes to be reactivated. We didn’t have that time. We tried the card just a few minutes later and it went through with about a minute to spare. This was due to having done CRRD, Super Power and L11. Tone 40 demonstrated.
We did this because our money goes such a long way to providing truth to the 4th dynamic and boy are they screaming out for it. TBH we are in a much Stronger position because we keep moving up the bridge. I’d like to inspire all Scientologists all over the world to support the IAS. It’s not an easy job to do for all concerned. I understand the beautiful consequences of contribution no matter what level and let’s not forget, many hands make light work.

Yeah, like when I opened like 6 credit cards in one day to see if we could scrounge up $10,000 for L11 (which we weren’t able to), and then learning later that hubby couldn’t even DO L11 right away, because he had to pay for and find a Clear twin to do the Survival Rundown with again! Still paying for that one, literally! Credit is in the toilet over it.
The most amazing part of that situation was when I was telling the Org Exec Sec about this problem, my bad credit blah blah, they said that from their understanding from the ED, credit is supposed to fluctuate! WHAT. They said it’s good if your credit score goes down, because it will just come back up again! *SMH*
Umm… Good luck with that! No. Credit doesn’t work like that, and I am sorry that your boss is giving you false data (false data stripping to the rescue LOL). And maybe you should stop giving people money advice when your own finances are in trouble to the tune of $100,000 to the “Ideal Building” and being paid nothing while on staff.

No words. The COS ad actually reads like parody. Scrambling to make a payment by 2:00 PM Thursday…no fake high pressure sales tactics with this “religion”. I’ll bet the Middletons had to sign a release before “donating” to their “church”. Does anyone else’s church require them to sign a release before making a donation?

Their clothes are probably from second hand store, living on crumbs, tired & overworked…so sad. So very sad.
Q: what is the “prize” at the end? Like Christians it’s heaven (or hell), Nirvana, Eden….what’s the end for Scientologist? Another body to come back & do this all over again in a new body? Do you retain these memories or do you start over again with no past memory? Someone stated ” it’s like Groundhog Day..”.

Just look in the eyes of these brainwashed, deluded scientologists. He looks like he is ready to cry. She looks like she is ready to kill. These are not happy people.
Thank you Mike for continuing to expose the masssive fraud being perpetrated by this criminal organization. I witness exploitation of members I know almost every day.
It’s painful to watch. I’m very familiar with how much IAS money is actually used to bring peace and prosperity to this planet. It mostly funds Miscaviges, lifestyle, lawyers, ineffective PR campaigns and occasional property acquisitions.
One thing I noticed. The big lie from regs that the money I donated would come back to me 10x never happened. What happened was more debt and thousands of dollars a year going out to Interest on debt.
Scientology is the organization that keeps on taking and taking and taking until you die.

This reminds me of being back in the days when I was paying more than $500 a month in credit card payments, not one penny of this was for personal expenditure, it was all for scientology donations, and yet still they tried to come after me for even more money. Every time you felt you created a little bit of a spare money they were hounding you for it, hardly any wonder that I never got much out of scientology, far too much stress at being so deeply in debt the whole time.

Scientology being one of the biggest Scams that still exists today…you seriously have got to be very very very stupid indeed to financialy fuck yourself over…and with so much enthusiasm to do so!

Robin Lawrence says
The saddest thing about this is that they probably weren’t forced; I mean I could be wrong but to me they just look like two gung ho run o th mill believing Scientologists who were happy to pay. Either that or it’s an invented anecdote with a random photograph to inspire Scientologists to think like that.
chukicita says
Not forced? How about misled?
Nothing would happen if the donation wasn’t given (except they might be in much better financial shape). Nothing would happen to them if the donation did not occur before 2 PM on Thursday. But they believed it would.
Who would invent an anecdote for publication that pretty much spells out a classic high-pressure scam?
“Spreading truth on the 4th dynamic” should take all their money? Pffff.
Aquamarine says
Exactly. Scam artists don’t force. They mislead and the victim willingly cooperates based on a delusion.
Carl says
Make no mistake about it Robin, they were heavily pressured to “up their status.” Nobody, but nobody, ever willingly gives to the IAS unless pressured to do so.
If there’s a positive note in this; it appears from their expressions in the photo that they may be open to an intervention about the Church.
Aquamarine says
Quite true, Carl, but then, these people are also deluded. They give because they are told their gift to the IAS is making a DIFFERENCE in the world. They give because they believe, wrongly, that when they give they are HELPING. In legal terms this is called “fraud” and if it occurs in amounts over $1000 across state lines, the FBI gets it as a case. But the cult gets away with fraud every minute of every day because they are a recognized “religion”.
Lisa W says
OMFG indeed. I honestly felt physically sick reading that. I had to read it a couple of times for it to sink in. Looking at the picture of the Middletons is heartbreaking. They look far from happy – he looks broken. They have been well and truly conned. I can imagine the conversation : “sorry, but we really can’t afford this”. “Yes, yes, you can! You must….. Look, look, you have an inactivated credit card! Use that. If you don’t pay the debt off in this body’s lifetime, you still have the next 20 bodies to do so!”
Financial rape at its very best.
Jens TINGLEFF says
One word:
Undue influence.
While we can all agree that this was a stupid thing to do (and with encouraging other victims to be victimised, part of an actively evil scam), I think that it’s the criminal organisation known as the “church” of $cientology which is the perpetrator here. Craig and Jan have been put under all kinds of pressure(1) that would be illegal – even in the US – if any organisation without “church” in the name exerted it.
(1) is this donation the result of an “ethics cycle,” is it something that happens just before they finally get to see their kids in the Damnation Navy, or is it something one of them decided to be better than divorce?!?

A Body Corporate (or Body Corp) is made up of a collective of unit owners, within a unit title development. Unit titles are a common form of ownership of a multi-unit complex and can include properties like apartments, townhouses, car parks, industrial units, and commercial offices. 🙂

KiwiGal, thanks for the link to their website. This is so so sad. They are a hard-working family business, cleaning windows. They should not be giving their money to the CofS, at this point in their lives, they should be saving for their retirement, or helping their son. I was hoping they were somehow independently wealthy and wouldn’t miss this money, but the truth is sad. To work hard their whole lives and end up broke and in debt, paying off credit cards due to an IAS donation. I only hope they will see the ‘analytics’ on their website, wonder why views are coming from this site all of a sudden, and follow the link back here to Mike’s blog and read these comments. The IAS encourages (pressures) people to do stupid and risky financial transactions, as long as the results wind up in the coffers of the IAS. Believe me, when the credit card bill comes due, the IAS reg who got this couple to donate will be long gone, and if this couple asks for the money back or attempts to cancel the transaction, it will result in an SP declare.
The IAS also tells the sheeple that they can’t get up the bridge without making “4th dynamic” (mankind/humanity) contributions such as this one. The IAS tells the sheeple that this is how they should “get their exchange in with LRH”. IAS vulture registrars like Michael Roberts/Jeff Pomerantz/Howard Becker (The IAS Troika) take it one step further and say that the honor statuses make up the “IAS Grade Chart” and that people can make “4th dynamic case gain” just by donating money to the IAS; no need to go in session.

Steven Spielberg has made it a life’s mission to record the stories of Holocaust survivors. I think it would be helpful if there were a site that people could just tell of their experiences in the cult of Scientology.

Scarlet Jones says
What an awesome idea, Sandy! In fact, I can see multiple ways to utilize such a compilation. It would make a fascinating book. It reminds me of the books I’ve read of interviews with former slaves, that were diligently recorded in the 1920s. First hand accounts are gold for historians….
Also, a brave person might make a pamphlet of just one story, and start handing it out to the SO folks they meet. “I’ll read yours, if you read mine.” Wouldn’t that be an awesome way to help people leave the cult? You wouldnt even have to risk being fair gamed; you could hire PIs to hand them out! … I would be willing to bankroll such an effort.

A Diamond says
How can the regges NOT see what’s going on and still believe in this shit? Someone said above that there’s even a policy letter saying to not handle finances like this. Aren’t they required to follow policy? KAW – Keep Aftermath Working all!
StudentofLife says
It’s my understanding that policy is for you to not hold back any wealth. Lucile Bosche, my longtime partner in business before disconnecting from me after I dared question Miscavige, actually did not deny it when I asked was it okay to hide millions from Scientology. She was a preclear after 7 years as a public as they took her thru past lives to g eat her money first, but I was shocked she said scientologists are supposed to be all the way in and be willing to give up everything. Maybe someone can clarify? What is policy?
gato rojo says
Diamond, you are correct. Many many years ago “policy” went by the boards if it didn’t support Mi$cavige’s ideas of how to soak money out of the minions. The free Scientology Centers don’t exist anymore, although LRH established them in Div. 6’s to help those who couldn’t pay.
Parishioners are no longer required to go see a legit MD for physical trouble or illness they are seeking help for, although LRH wrote policy on this. (If this one simple policy were applied 100% Lisa MacPhearson might be alive today.) Heaven forbid what if the doctor found a physical ailment that needed to be addressed immediately? That’s right….no immediate income for $cientology. So let’s get rid of that stupid policy, right?
There is NO LRH policy about soliciting donations from parishioners without providing a product or service in exchange, such as courses, auditing or books and other materials. As a matter of fact, he discusses that donations are NOT the way to gain income, and churches should make sure they are delivering excellent service and receive legitimate recompense for those services…not try to do side shows, baby-sitting, raffles, games and other foolishness for income when auditing and training, when done right, does bring very good results and plenty of income.
Additionally the fees charged these days for that auditing and training are out the roof, completely unaffordable for most people. When I started, I paid $1,250.00 for ALL the Academy training. It’s probably over $20,000 now. When I started, one auditing intensive (12.5 hours) was $625 at the MOST, depending on how much you purchased at a time. Now it’s what…$10,000?
This tells you that the Regges around these days were not there in the beginning and have no idea what has gone down and how things have changed. If they were told these things they would say it’s lies, right? And, if there are old-timers still regging and buying into this criminality, they are unfortunately very long gone and fingers and toes crossed that they can figure out a way to escape fast. If they still have half a brain that is thinking somewhat sanely.
Yes….Keep the Aftermath Working! Because this bastardization of scientology sure isn’t!
Spike says
Gato rojo, it’s not the same group it was say, 40 years ago. Very different. A bizarro version of itself.
WhatWall says
Gato Rojo said: “This tells you that the Regges around these days were not there in the beginning and have no idea what has gone down and how things have changed.”
When I became a Scientologist in the late 70’s, regges (registrars) used high pressure tactics to sell The Bridge to Total Freedom. They even helped people get new credit cards or increase spending limits on the ones they had. It’s true that they didn’t have the IAS, Ideal Org projects, etc. to sell but they sold what they had HARD.
Required reading for every registrar was Les Dane’s book, “Big League Sales Closing Techniques”:
https://scicrit.wordpress.com/2014/06/14/big-league-sales-closing-techniques-scientologys-ecclesiastical-sales-manual/
The registrars would go easy on the newbies but once you had a few courses under your belt, they would lean on you hard to buy big dollar packages (e.g., Clear package, OT III package). Flag registrars pushed the notoriously expensive L-10, L-11 and L-12 (special Flag-only rundowns).
Gato Rojo mentioned that he bought his Academy training package for $1,250 but didn’t say when. If bought in 1965, that $1,250 is worth almost $10,000 in today’s dollars. If purchased in 1975, it’s almost $6,000. 1980 dollars would be worth about $4,000 today. Still not cheap.
One thing has changed for sure: The money extracted from Scientology’s parishioners now ends up in Miscavige’s coffers instead of in Hubbard’s.
gorillavee says

Oh this is so nuts. Destroying your own present and future with crushing debt, at the behest of a group that claims it is looking out for your “eternity”. This is one of the things that opened my eyes that CoS doesn’t follow their own doctrine. There is even a policy letter specifically explaining not to handle finances like this, but the regges constantly push people beyond what they can possibly afford, and into the downward spiral. I wish I could shake these folks back into reality.

The couple above claim to be Clear, etc etc and are veteran Scientologists, so they are informed as to what “the game” is. THEY are the people who keep this scam alive and well. They are not victims, THEY ARE RESPONSIBLE.
Now here’s my question … so, how long do y’all think it will be before the Middletons get another phone call? (there is always another status to shoot for, you can always put in a little “flow” towards it and send some moolah to Kim Jung Dave for his daily pompadour touch up).
Craig and Jan – enjoy your new “status” while you can … SUCKERS!!!!!!!!!!!
Ms. B. Haven says

“Now here’s my question … so, how long do y’all think it will be before the Middletons get another phone call? (there is always another status to shoot for, you can always put in a little “flow” towards it and send some moolah to Kim Jung Dave for his daily pompadour touch up).”
My answer would be about the same amount of time it would take a reg to sell an “OT III” package to a newly minted ‘clear’. Once one attains the exalted state of ‘clear’ they find themselves smack dab in the middle of the scary ‘no interference zone’ and they must get through the ‘wall of fire’ asap or all kinds of bad and nasty things will happen.
Apparently the state of ‘clear’ is incredibly unstable and leaves one very vulnerable to one’s ‘OT case’. In reality ‘clear’, just like all auditing, is just a temporary euphoria that soon fades into the sunset. The reason that one has to get through OT III is that the idea of ‘body thetans’ are introduced to explain away all of the magical abilities a ‘clear’ is supposed to have but doesn’t. Since the number of body thetans is virtually infinite, it’s going to take one hell of a long time to handle them and this will keep the ‘pre-OT’ very busy.
Just so with IAS Statuses. One is regged within an inch of their life savings and a new Status is bestowed. One cannot be allowed to linger and bask in the glory of that Status though. So the mark is quickly regged to the next almost impossible level to get them through this sort of IAS ‘no interference zone’. In other words, the mark is kept very busy and very worried about their finances and they won’t have time to actually look to see if their donations are actually accomplishing what was promised. Just as body thetans are unlimited in number, so are the number of dollars one can donate to the IAS.
If all of this looks like a pyramid scheme or a Ponzi scam it is. Hubbard created one of the most successful cons of all time. Like you say Joe, we weren’t victims, we were responsible. I got sucked in because of personal circumstances and the lack of critical thinking skills, I bought scientology hook, line and sinker. I too was able to get out of the cult with some cash in me purse and haven’t looked back. In hindsight, losing the money that I did almost 30 years ago wasn’t really that big of a deal. It was a steep price to pay for those life lessons, but I learned those lessons well. The part that really cost me was the mind fuck that I had to untangle myself from. Life is good, but I’m still working on that one a bit to tidy up a few loose ends.
WhatAreYourCrimes says
Joe, do live in or near Chiang Mai? I love that part of the world.
Anyway, you do have a good point.
Should we feel sorry for these people as victims, or should we loath them as enablers of a sick evil?
It’s a very interesting philosophical debate. I suppose the deciding line could be found in the degree of their ignorance of scientology’s evil.
Joe Pendleton says
I do indeed live in beautiful Chiang Mai (six years now). I would not characterize Scientology as simply “evil”: I don’t ever regret my 35 years in the CoS, had many great personal wins and lots of fun too. But I do consider that LRH’s megalomania eventually got the best of him and that the CoS slowly but surely has become a Soviet style fascist organization. And yes, I do think that folks who donate their money and support their policies are prime enablers.
WhatAreYourCrimes says
I loved Chiang Mai, I was there in 2006 for awhile.
I am surely on your side that the current members can no longer plead ignorance to the crap of scientology anymore, including the whales and “useful idiots” that are called celebrity scientologists.
At some point, in this connected and exposed world of the internet and social media, those still “in” scientology must make a choice…
1. Either remain sick and cruel bastards who are endorsing a destructive and criminal enterprise, and be remembered in history as such…
OR…
2. Get out of scientology.
Claire Swazey says
I also agree with those who think the Middlestons look sad in that picture. They do. Especially Mr. Middleston. So I guess they didn’t even get that very brief euphoric moment of triumph out of it. This is tragic.
chuckbeatty77 says
They need the “Criminally OverRegged Repair List” or better the “Quit Fast Rundown” (one step, resign this fake scam “church”, and talk Xenu and “body-thetans” exorcism theory to anyone who tries to “handle” them).
Claire Swazey says
And how on earth are they going to feel once they’ve left CofS? VERY wealthy people have been bankrupted by this organization. It’s like there’s a really brief highly euphoric flush of triumph then at 2:01 pm, the clock starts ticking again.
They are never satisfied. The cult’s financial predation makes me think of the Moloch idol with the fiery furnace in it and they keep feeding people to it and it’s never full/satisfied.
WhatWall says
Since they borrowed on a credit card, which is unsecured debt, perhaps they won’t lose their home when they can’t make the payments. I know of one couple who, due to Scientology related debt, lost their home to foreclosure. In their 60’s, they had to move to a rental and start over again.
Who knows how many people’s finances have been destroyed by Scientology’s predatory practices? Once financially ruined they think that they “pulled it in” due to their out-ethics and PTSness, so they keep quiet. Even if disaffected and under-the-radar, they are held back from exposing the financial rape due to self-blame, shame, and fear of losing family and/or job.
What kind of “church” installs a mechanism that triggers self-blame and silence in response to being bankrupted by its rapacious religion-cloaked hucksters?
I gave the IAS $40,000 before I achieved the HIGHEST and BEST status of all: ex-Scientologist
Note: If you have a Facebook account and aren’t staying under-the-radar, you can share your opinions, thoughts, experiences, and stories about the IAS “to help inform the decisions of other donors” at the bottom of the Charity Navigator web site’s IAS page (https://www.charitynavigator.org/index.cfm?bay=search.profile&ein=980136012). *(disclaimer: every single bit of scn is harmful, damaging, and brainwashing. No benefit is possible as any and all of it also serves to keep one enslaved and hoodwinked)
But I still “know” it, so here’s what’s what.
Borrowing money violates hubbtards own policy.
There are HCO PLs which specifically forbid an org to “buy on credit” or go into debt. Each week the income must go through the financial planning committee, this small group of org execs then take up the bills and requests for purchases, (purchase orders) and sets aside money according to finance policy. Percentage for management fees, promotion, staff pay, back bills, and so on.
No purchase orders are approved unless the money is there in hand to pay.
No purchases are allowed without an approved purchase order.
Policy is written that if a staff member buys something without a PO they are held personally responsible for the purchase.
…..
As per various tek and policy writings, all of the policy applies to one’s own life as well as an organization. The Life Orientation Course has one write out their own life’s organizing board. The policies all apply.
Therefore no public person can borrow money without violating hubbtard’s own policy. (policy has the same force as the tek, all must be followed 100 percent)
Telling regges that I won’t borrow money because it violates policy is fun.
…..
Those poor deluded bastards. It’s just shameful.
(oh, if I didn’t have to be UTR, wouldn’t I love to tell a few tales of giving regges a run for their money. bwhahaha)
T-Marie says
secretfornow, those kinds of policies would make sense and are pretty much commonplace in the real world, but, as we know, the slurch has nothing to do with the real world.
Being a staff member, I was “excused” from a lot of this BS. But I did see people throw away their kids’ savings, retirement accounts, max out credit cards, etc…all the stuff we hear about every day.
Two of my kids and I are lifetime members…maybe we’ll cash out when payback time comes. LOL 😉

These are the kind of LRH references I would show, back in the day. They meant nothing to the staff. Reading this stuff moved them not one whit. This lead me to suspect that they had been drilled on this type of interaction with a public a great deal, as one would bullbait someone to get them “flat” on the subject (which means that they don’t flinch or get thrown off or react in any way).
Well, that’s fine, but oooh, the irony – if my suspicions were correct – the IRONY of staff having to be bullbaited on LRH finance policies!
Think about it; doesn’t it blow your mind?

It may be more than this, just after I completed the Patron 10+ years ago they put all the rates up, I think $100,000 became the Patron amount and with honors was considerably higher. Of course they don’t publicize the amounts any more due to all the negative press it generates.
secretfornow says
patron was 20, then 30, then I thought, 40 – I’ve successfully avoided paying so I don’t know. But 100 grand sounds high. They did used to have the amounts listed in the insert into the IAS mag, not in the mag itself, but just in an insert.

I am totally disgusted by their “success story” of giving to the I.A.S. through a credit card one minute before the 2pm deadline. How ridiculous! Did they stop for one minute to think about this? Why the urgent need to do it before 2pm? What would happen if it was say, ten minutes later, or an hour? What difference could it possibly make? Will the world collapse if their donation isn’t recorded by 2 o’clock?
Did they ask, what exactly is this money going to be used for? Or ask: Could I see a chart that shows where the money goes, what percent to what programs? No, they did not.
They have no clue what is being done with their money. Did they consider that if they were turned down for a loan, there is a reason? They can’t afford to give more money!
Why in the world do otherwise intelligent people, fold under pressure to immediately-rush-rush-rush give more money than they can spare to an organization that doesn’t even provide an accounting of what they are doing with their money? Stupid. Wake up people!
By the way, your donations are going to pay for private investigators to follow and harass former members. To buy and sift through their garbage (true story). And lawyers to fight them in court when they request refunds. They spend more on lawyers than they would to simply refund them. Your ‘volunteer ministers’ are a joke, unhelpful and unwanted at scenes of disaster, and the IAS does not pay for their travel expenses, the members do this themselves. So, where are Your I.A.S. donations going?
alcoboyy says
Alas, if only those poor people at Jonestown had only stopped and asked ” What exactly is in that vat of Kool-aid? “.
Not trying to be funny but just giving an example of what happens when people won’t take the blinders off.
T.J. says
Yes Jonestown was tragic – and remember a third of the people who died were children, who didn’t have a choice. I’ve researched that cult also and apparently Jim Jones had staged mock ‘koolaide drills’ several times before, so that at first some people didn’t know if this was another Jones-style fake ‘ending scenario’ drill. And the conditioning was already in, Jones had methodically removed choice and free will from his people, much as Scientology is able to condition their members to accept what they tell them and what is expected of them. So this Scn couple has already been conditioned to believe it is imperative that they donate this money. In the case of Jonestown, the average person will not do something so radical, but after month and even years of conditioning to believe that they need to follow what the cult leader says without questioning, this is the tragic outcome. This is why all mind-manipulating cults are dangerous.
T-Marie says
T.J.!!!!!!!!! You don’t ask these kinds of questions….EVER! EVER! You’ll be accused of having counter-intention to clearing the planet and possibly even called suppressive! You will definitely be sent to Ethics.
Besides, when I was in, I never doubted that the money was funding the uber-important, life-saving, psych-busting, planet clearing activities that the slurch was doing. The thought never ever crossed my mind that those were lies.
T.J. says
T-Marie, you never asked yourself where the money was going? Or why it was so important to donate by 2pm? Or even if the Reg was getting a commission on your donation? Or did you think it inside your head, but were afraid to voice it? Or did you just self-suppress the questions? Really trying to understand the mind-set, thanks! Happy you are out and freeeeeeee! 🙂
T-Marie says
T.J. – No, I never did ask myself those questions. Never. The by 2:00 Thursday thing is a “game” we all played. I knew the registrar got a commission. That too is part of the game. That didn’t bother me either. Because all I ever got was propaganda, I just knew the money was being used in the most ethical/moral manner. Never doubted it.
In our little group, we used the money wisely, delivered what we promised and even had a reserve account with plenty of money in it.
But, I was from a smaller city, where our small staff were truly people of goodwill, with good intentions and “WE” didn’t screw people over on a daily basis (at least not in the magnitude of the large organizations).
It wasn’t until we got new management from the Los Angeles area that things started to get really corrupt and I started to realize that it was all about the money for them. Since they were at the highest levels on the “Bridge”, I figured this must be what it’s like at the top.
Insert the internet and some crazy unreal stuff that happened when a young girl “blew” the Sea Organization in L.A. and went home to her family in New Orleans and I, along with a public Scn. was asked to basically “chase” her and make phone calls that she was a suicide risk… WTH? I had NO idea that such things happened in my “church”. No idea.
THAT was the beginning of the end for me. I didn’t want to be a part of this kind of group.
So, what you see is as long as the slurch can keep information away from you, they can fool you. That’s why they work VERY hard to make sure members get zero information from elsewhere.
But, once you get information about what your slurch is actually doing in real life, then I guess it becomes a matter of whether you think you can live with it, change it, or leave it.
I didn’t have family members in the cult that would disconnect from me, so I left it. That was in 1999.
I can’t sit here and say that I would have left so “easily” if I knew family members would disconnect from me or say, if my ex took my kids and disconnected. I also hadn’t invested hundreds of thousands of dollars into the slurch. I only invested 12 years of my time.
Badafuco says

You and the IAS are actually proud that you went into financial Emergency possibly Danger. OMFG is right.
John P. Capitalist says
Here we see the full power of Scientology “tech” in action. Remember all those “success stories” in the “Advance!” magazine in the 1960s and 1970’s? The ones like “I was late for an appointment and hit a red light. So I went exterior and reached into the control box for the street light and pulled the actuator. 20 seconds later, the light turned green. Thanks, LRH!”
Well, here, someone is doing the same thing “I was desperately searching for my last credit card so I wouldn’t get sent up for another 6 intensives of sec checks in Ethics. I went exterior and discovered the credit card where I had buried it in my garden just so I wouldn’t be able to get suckered into using it. I put a $10,000 IAS donation on the card, which will take me 8 years at 29% interest to pay back, but at least it saved me from $75,000 worth of sec checks. Thanks, LRH!”
Valerie says
If that look on their faces was their happy face, I’d hate to see their sad face.
The only possible escape is to file for bankruptcy NOW before the 90 day clock runs and let the court claw back their huge donation to pay back the credit card company or in most cases companies at pennies on the dollar.
I’d like to see a “parishioner” pull that stunt once just to shut down a few vulture regges.

Since watching Mary Kahn’s episode on Aftermath, and hearing her tearful words: “They owned me!” I look at these stories through a different filter. Those two are not smiling with their eyes. How much might they have been praying that they wouldn’t find that card; that the transaction wouldn’t go through? How hard were they pressured to write up their “wins” in such a way that portrayed the CoS in the best light? Do they have children that they are “paying” to keep in contact with? I don’t think it’s fair to belittle them given these possibilities.
This story is really, really sad, imo. I think the OMFG says more about the fact that (as others noted) the church thought this was a great example to share.

Nearly everything has been TAKEN AWAY from them….and now some IDIOTS are saying all of these lovely people basically are “making up stories”
To see the PAIN in all of their eyes and in their voices as they tell their stories. To know most of them have been forcibly separated by CO$ from their family members. THIS is “church policy”????
I know of NO Church that tries to separate families, I know of NO church that wishes to cause pain, harm, discomfort to it members OR former members. People LEAVING churches WILLINGLY for a variety of reasons….I’ve done so myself & was NOT “chased after, harassed, bothered” by that former church.
One would think that in order for a church congregation to GROW and increase membership…that particular church would WELCOME pregnancies to increase the number of babies born into the church, especially to its hierarchy……what better SHOW of affection FOR that church could there be then for those at the TOP of the heap to have children who will be dedicated to that particular church?

Hi –
May I ask, just for some context for a never in, how much do you have to donate to get Patron with Honours status?
The organization (sorry I just can’t call it a ch**ch) gets the money free & clear and these poor saps get the debt plus interest.
Yeesh!
Mark Fulton says
$100,000; I do not know if it is accumulative over time or required to be a one time fleecing, er, donation.
Mary Smith says
If I remember correctly it is $100,000. These people look so sad. Too bad they don’t read Hubbard’s caution about never going into debt as then you are owned others and PTS.
Scnethics says
Patron with Honors was $100,000 10 years ago and may be still. This reflects their total donations to the IAS over time, so this particular donation may have been $5000, $10000, $20000 – no way to know, but it put them over $100,000.
Just Hummin' Along says
Thanks to you all for your explanations, I guess that explains why they were turned down for, what was most likely, yet another loan, or a 2nd or 3rd mortgage.
(C’mon, c’mon just another $5,000/$10,000 and you’ll get a nice shiny trophy to show off for all eternity!( ( I hope they’re edible trophies, that might come in handy down the road).
What happens to the sanity of these folks when the banks & credit card companies start pressuring them for payment, payment they are actually entitled to, with just as much force as the ch**ch?
They are between a rock & a very hard, cold, uncaring place.

Please someone, anyone, workout an OFF switch to Scientology and their scams!!

The end phenomenon: IAS gets to hoard another few bucks that will never be used to anyone’s benefit. But this poor sap will be paying 18% interest for a long time to come. And undoubtedly this did not buy him any reprieve. Having proved himself a sucker, I’m sure they’re hounding him as we speak, for more, more and more.
Lisa Mieth says
OMG Its sad and pathetic. How I bankrupted myself to total freedom.
Old Surfer Dude says
But, you did get your old life back, Lisa. That’s the most important thing. Walking away from the cult is true freedom. I walked away from the Honolulu mission, back in the mid 70s. The first thing I did was go surfing! It was such a relief to get out of that group!
Don_M says
I’m surprised the COS would publish this. It’s just so plainly delusional. This fellow was able to get a credit card and run it up after being denied a bank loan. Says if he gets a card like this he would ‘bin it’. So we can assume he doesn’t consider using credit cards to be prudent. Yet he gets a credit card and let’s see …. google search … patron with honors = 100,000 USD… runs up his credit card and believes he is being tone 40? wow just wow! And the Church publishes it as if the guy is a hero or something.
This is evil on so many levels, not the least of which is ;
– the techniques used to put a guy in this state of mind.
– that a church would promote a guy who can’t even qualify for a bank loan and has to use a credit card for this kind of sum as being somehow ‘able’ and ‘tone 40’.
– that getting a credit card and running it up is somehow something that requires special Church of Scientology training of CCRD, Super Power and L11.
It’s sobering to think that to those in critical thinking circles or cultic studies this is a clear example of a couple being cruelly victimized, but to those inside the church it is something to celebrate and applaud.
My heart goes out to the couple if and when they realize the ‘beautiful consequences’ of giving the church your money is a fallacy and ‘providing truth on the 4th dynamic’ and ‘people are screaming’ for their truth is again a falsehood by knowing and unknowingly willing conmen.
Aquamarine says

Wow..just.. huh. So we are proud we found a credit card, that we never use and hate so much, so at the 9th hour (again cause it never stops) we can give money to the cult. Its sad

OSD, Can you imagine what the yearly fee (donation) will be for that card, maybe 50 large for the “slate” card, $250,000 for a platinum and the IAS gets to keep the skymiles, just because.
And just for cherch members a low, low interest rate of 37%, because they care about you!

Aquamarine says
Credit card companies love people like the Middletons. Why do you think they still lend to them?
The Middletons have lots of company outside the cult.
High interest, late fees, never ending debt, compulsive spending, emotional, impulse buying – credit card companies LOVE people who are bad with money. So long as they’re not outright deadbeats, these are the people who generate the high profits for them.
If everyone were good with money, were disciplined in their use of credit and in general applied proven financial principles to their spending and savings, these companies would lose plenty of money and might even have to fold.
Aquamarine says
Also inadequate health care coverage helps the credit card companies because such people frequently pay medical bills with credit cards. I’ve observed a number of people who went into very high debt to pay medical and hospital bills.
The bottom line is the banks who lend this unsecured debt have a vested interest in keeping lots of people in continuing, high interest credit card debt, in one way or another, whether it be out of control impulse spending or a sudden huge medical emergency, pressure from the Cult of Scientology. Or whatever.
Gimpy says
Silly fools.
James Morris says
The Middletons make this sound as if they are testifying to a miracle; to a victory snatched from the jaws of defeat. But—and this is probably just me—the messages between the lines struck me as these are desperate and monstrous lies the Middletons are telling to themselves.
And the photograph!
Lordy.
That picture is not of joy or success. I see woe and regret beneath a tissue-thin veneer of “just enough to fool everybody” happiness and health. That is, they’d Downgraded their Statuses and they know it. Plus, they know that we know it.
I feel badly for them.
I certainly wouldn’t promote this out in the wog world!
But that’s just me.

Randomness says
Wow, wow, wow, wow! OMFG is the right heading for this….i specially love how they attribute their getting into debt as being because they had done “CRRD, Super Power and L11″…such a joke…and the fact that the IAS are now straight out using this Modus operandi as a promotional – I mean I know we’ve all pushed the limits on our credits cards – but actually promoting this – crazy shit! Disgusting f ing a** holes!
Dead Men Tell No Tales says
Why do you think the loan was disapproved?
Because the vultures had already bled them dry to the point that their credit was toast.
KK says
So very sad. It sounds as if he/she had a stroke the IAS would pry the card out of their hand to run it before stat deadline and before any aid rendered.

Knew a person who had given the cult every dime they had including all savings and retirement funds and then wound up living in a car when they lost their job and the bank foreclosed and kicked them out of the house. Sad, abysmally sad especially for an elderly person.
Wendy M says
Hmm – that pressure to donate on an arbitrary deadline is why the donor does not think about it clearly (is fixed on getting it done because he is being hustled and hassled), does not consider the repayment plan, the interest rates or how he is going to deal with the repayment of the loan in the long term. “We don’t use CCs”. So fiscally responsible people just threw all caution to the wind – for Thursday 2pm. (And surprise, surprise the credit card company thought it was suspicious.) What difference to the IAS if they get it at 2 minutes to 2pm or twenty minutes past? No difference except that the arbitrary deadline is what keeps the pressure up – often overt – sometimes subtle – but don’t dare ask the IAS for their books to see what they really use the money for. In Africa a castle was purchased and two buildings in Zimbabwe. So far nothing has occurred there except for illegal occupations. The property and utility rates on the castle must be phenomenal to cover monthly – but still nothing. And even if it the buildings were renovated and used for purpose – they are not attracting new members – witness those orgs that did go “ideal” and the barely functional/probably not functional test centre in Braamfontein. The ideal org strategy failed and no one has the courage to abandon it – oh …wait….the strategy was always a diversion – along with the disaster capitalism projects. The church can try to “dead-agent” whoever and whatever it likes — the truth is still the truth, and is observable to anyone (especially on the inside) who cares to look. The staff and SO get treated extremely poorly, the public are crush regged. And there are NO results.
Harpoona Frittata says
“but don’t dare ask the IAS for their books to see what they really use the money for.”
That’s for sure! $cilons have to be the most gullible and overly trusting folks on the planet when it comes to the kind of charitable donation accounting procedures and oversight that every single large charitable organization has in place, which the Co$ does not.
What’s wrong with these silly, drain bamage fools? Don’t they understand that they have every right – I’d say, duty – to be informed of where there money is going and how much of it is is being spent for actual charitable giving purposes vs. administrative overhead?
Moop says
Holy shit.

I just threw up reading that. Any public scn who doesn’t connect the dots after reading that is either swimming in the kool aid or just plain challenged. I feel so bad for these people getting taken advantage of but that still doesn’t negate that fact that we are responsible for our own finances. Members of this so called church need to start standing up for themselves and saying enough is enough because this is just plain ridiculous

Or, in other words, I got into huge debt so that could donate to a multi-billion dollar cult! Plus due to my OT abilities, I managed to get it done before Thursday at 2pm!
Then I only had to search for an hour, looking for my car keys but because I did my L’s, I found them in my pocket.
Further great news is that I’ll get a bowling trophy at the next event!
OMG is right Mike.
WhatAreYourCrimes says
“bowling trophy”… LOL.

Unreal. So they spent thousand of dollars on CRRD, Super Power, and L11 in order to figure out how to max out a credit card for the IAS that has billions of dollars in various accounts when their loan request was denied. I just don’t even know where to start with these idiots. They are definitely not seeing how badly they are being used by this “church.” It’s kind of heartbreaking.
Harpoona Frittata says
Loved this bit of goofy, delusional magical thinking: “We tried the card just a few minutes later and it went through with about a minute to spare. This was due to having done CRRD, Super Power and L11. Tone 40 demonstrated.”
No it wasn’t; it was due to the cult’s vulture reges making these two poor duped dingbats think it was important, then hustling the hell out of them for a stat that doesn’t matter to anyone except the poor fools who’d be punished by the cult if they didn’t get it!
I want to know WTF ever happened to the only real stats that track the actual progress (or lack thereof) towards planetary clearing? Buying and refurbishing huge, pricey Ideal Orgs only advances planetary clearing IF they’re filled up with lots and lots of new public getting on the bridge, then getting trained as auditors who actually do the auditing required to clear folks…simple as that!
How is it that all these duped and defrauded cult sheeple can’t see what’s right before their very eyes!!?
With an approximate net increase in the world’s population of 200,000 per day, and the total number of clears ever made in the entire history of the cult standing at less than 70,000 (per the most recent edition of the cult mag, The Auditor), it’s crystal clear that, not only is their NO PROGRESS being made in accomplishing the cult’s most important goal, but it’s actually getting further and further away with each passing day – as the net increase in world population is occurring at a rate that is many times greater than the rate of clears being produced.
Even more disconcerting for this criminal fraud syndicate posing as a religion is the fact that the cult’s major stats are all trending straight down and vertical with no relief in sight. Indeed, after Hurricane Leah makes landfall again this year, there may not even be enough $cilons left in the cult to keep the lights on, let alone any new victims to jump into the cult…Xenu willing 😉

OMFG is right. Stupidity, thy names are Craig and Jan Middleton. And the irony, the supreme irony of their crediting their “Tone 40” intention of getting the payment in a minute before 2PM on Thursday to having done CCRD, Super Power and L11. Really, there are no words for how deluded these people are.
On one hand, they look like nice, sincere, helpful folks and I feel sorry for them.
On the other hand, I think, well, no one has any right to be this stupid. That includes me and how stupid I was, back in the day. Not that its right, but no one has the right to be an adult and be this dumb. PT Barnum was onto something.
kengullette says

“Loan disapproved” Just proves the couple are deeply in debt. But it also raises the question “what will they do when that huge credit card charge comes due?” Oh, yeah, just like so many registrars have always pushed; get another credit card to pay off the first one. Anyway, yes, Mike it is amazing the cult actually published this palabar, but foot shooting is what they’re becoming better and better at though. Maybe they’ll publish a suckess story about that gain. 🙂
Sacrebleu! says
Delusional. Very sad. Craig’s eyes tell a different story than Jan’s. She looks certain and a bit smug, he looks like “Awww, shit!”
Joan says
Wow! And so, so sad ?
Tom Ufer says
Unbelievable how happy they sound about how they just dug themselves deeper into debt.
Aquamarine says
Well, they need to shore up some admiration, approval and applause from the staff and their fellow culties before the bills start coming in. And you can bet that when the wolves get hungry again and they get hit on and start whining about how much they’ve already given and how much in debt they, the cult will say, “OK, this is how you can help us, get on the horn with your fellow Scientologists and ‘activate’ them”.
When they’re tapped out and exhausted, resentful and belligerent, they’l be used as registrars and as examples of how to do the Spirit of Play thing in a BIG way.
Sad.
Aquamarine says
But you know something? If what they did, as financially stupid as it is – if going into debt like this were REALLY going to help people, REALLY going to make a difference to their fellow man in the world or at least do some actual good in their immediate area – in brief, if it were REALLY true that this couple had just risked a lot, sacrificed, as it were, for an organization that would do ACTUAL good, my hat would be off to them for their unselfishness and willingness to take on this financial burden.
There are so many ways that 100K could do a great deal of good, not just feeding people but educating them, teaching them a trade or something and thereby lifting them out of poverty…so much good could be done it almost hurts to think about it.
And here they are, just throwing it away.
No words.
Aquamarine says
God Damn this fucking cult for giving help a bad name, for making help equivalent to betrayal. God Damn them.
Tana Hensley says
Vomit! Sounds just as ridiculous and phony as their promo videos. They really don’t get outside of their culture because to think anyone is persuaded from that story is really clueless.
Reminds me of a late night infomercial. Or the late night church pastor’s asking for donations for their Spring Water that once you buy thiss amazing water & drink it you’ll feel the holy spirit and your life will change forever. I mean really? So fake.

Ann B Watson says
OMFG here also. I have not seen a more pathetic and delusional promo piece as this one is. This couple just cannot see that all that happened with their cc in not due to super OT powers just to the idiosyncrasies of the Web. How absolutely horrible The “Church of Scientology ” is and dragging those who are under the spell of David and having them believe they are doing the important work for the IAS. My admiration for all who got out and away from him grows by the second. How this system has crashed and burned and is burning right now the Scientology Tech that when I was first in I thought was a guiding light Forever, has shown it’s true colors. I will never give up trying to help bring this mess down. Dm is a monster. ?

Getting several thousand (40,000?) on a Petition to the White House requires a response by law. Perhaps Mike and Leah can scroll a link to sign a Petition online, frequently on their TV show.

anyone who was a member should consider telling their stories.
In very particular, those who did small favours for OSA often broke the law at the bidding of the criminal organisation known as the “church” of $cientology.
Little things, like allowing OSA to spy on your neighbour, to infiltrate a volunteer group and leak info, to become a patient at a doctor and steal his mail. All these things may have seemed much less significant when Saving The Planet NOW!!! – i.e. while under the undue influence – but they are are not legal and they are not “church” like…

This kind of fixation on getting money NOW NOW NOW and fleecing the public was the main reason I became disillusioned with the Church and eventually left. And that was 10 years ago.
