The Idle Org money crush to buy extravagant and unnecessary buildings in deserted areas of cities around the world has been the subject of much comment and speculation.
But here are some facts and figures — not for the faint of heart. But it does prove the economic wisdom of Miscavige’s plan. Wisdom is used advisedly of course. If your PURPOSE is to accumulate MEST it is a fabulous plan. Though if your purpose is to help people, it is an unmitigated disaster.
First of all, what does it take to get one of these fancy Scientology Idle Org Donation statuses?
This list, presented on the New Haven Ideal Org website tells the story:
SCIENTOLOGY DONATION STATUSES
(These are contribution levels specifically and only for building donations)
SPONSOR – $500
CRUSADER- $1,000
HONOR ROLL – $5,000
CORNERSTONE – $10,000
CORNERSTONE WITH HONORS -$20,000
VANGUARD MEMBER -$35,000
BENEFACTOR -$50,000
GUARANTOR -$75,000-
HUMANITARIAN -$100,000
HUMANITARIAN W/HONORS – $150,000
SILVER HUMANITARIAN -$250,000
GOLD HUMANITARIAN – $500,000
PLATINUM HUMANITARIAN -$750,000
NEW CIVILIZATION BUILDER -$1,000,000
But wait!
In order to accommodate the whales who are serious about status and want to part ways with really obscene amounts of money (and receive truly ridiculous amounts of sucking up), there are more statuses. Anyone who knows how much these “acknowledgments” will set you back, please chip in. I have no idea but obviously more than the million required to be a “New Civilization Builder”.
SILVER NEW CIVILIZATION BUILDER
GOLD NEW CIVILIZATION BUILDER
IDEAL NEW CIVILIZATION BUILDER
And in fact the Western United States alone has 6 Silver NCB’s, 3 Gold NCBs, 3 Ideal NCBs – that is a lot of privilege and prestige, not to mention a lot of cash (or empty real estate). It also represents fawning and “ethics protection” that would make the Queen of England blush. It is probably hard to understand for outsiders but imagine for a moment that every single person you deal with in your life, your employees, your church minister, your friends, the lady who cleans your floor, all treat you like you were anointed and you could (no, should) be forgiven any fault or flaw by everyone you deal with. Imagine that when you sit down at a function, you sit a few feet away from the “stars” 0f Scientology — Tom Cruise, John Travolta or Jenna Elfman. It’s no different than the whales who blow millions at the crap tables in Vegas because they enjoy being treated like royalty, the most expensive suites, ringside seats for the title fights and shows, the best tables in the restaurants. If you have that sort of money, its the perks and privilege — the STATUS that is all you can buy.
But status generated by buying privilege has NOTHING to do with Scientology.
And I haven’t even mentioned the International Association of Statuses — the original and still the best rip off ever.
Strange Gets Stranger
We all heard about the straight up and photoshopped Portland Idle Org opening and that would logically mean they must have completed the fund raising and then wrapped up the building.
That would make sense but that is not how they roll in David Miscavige’s Fundamentalist Church of Scientology.
Check out this list of Ideal Org Donations showing the huge push in the last month before the Portland opening. What on earth did they need all that money for? Even though the building was purchased and renovated, frantic fund raising occurred right up to the May 11th opening. And most of the donations came from people across the Western United States. It looks like a Scientology wide fund raiding push to donate “for the opening.” Even Miscavige couldn’t blow that much on an event with 500 people?
Now that I know how much these status represent its one of two things: 1. It was just a gimmick to get more money “for the opening” or 2. Miscavige spent the money out of Reserves or from some other building collection fund (Super Power????) in order to HAVE a ribbon to cut to show at June 6th and then started to really put the heat on to demand it be repaid.
My money is on the latter. He CANNOT afford not to have orgs to show at his events. He is staking his entire reputation on this and has convinced the Scientology public that the opening of empty Ideal Orgs proves that he is leading Scientology to the promised land. Now having done that, the Ideal Orgs cannot dry up. They HAVE to keep happening. So you are going to see ever more bizarre things happening — including orgs now opening with virtually NO staff. They always used to have posed photos of all the staff in their new uniforms for the “IDeal Orgs.” Didnt see that for Portland or Pretoria….
So. here is how much was squeezed out of the whales in that last month.

Mike, thank you for this latest edition of truth inclusive of both fact and your educated eval. All I could think of while reading this is how much money has gone into MEST when instead it could have been invested in theta. With all this money, how many people could have gone Clear, how many auditors could have been trained, how many staff could have been subsidized to to support the producing of Scientology’s 2 sole products. So much money which could have been set up in scholarships for upstat staff and public to be tech trained, admin trained, cases handled. Talk about desiring to make an effect! Talk about status! They’ve been convinced that their new building is changing civilization. No, sorry, Whales, the only thing that will change civilization is, per LRH, “…you and me with our sleeves rolled up”. That means people getting rid of their reactive minds, one at a time. God, its sad.

What is life like AFTER LEAVING SCIENTOLOGY Inc,. I can state in black and white that Sea Org members that left do not regret their decision. A good estimate is 30,000 of them. This is since 1967. (from multiple Sea Org bases.,)
Ah~~ the sheer pleasure and joy of not having multiple calls a day asking for money…..
How cool is it to be able to say what you think without having someone “Knowledge report” what you just said, costing you another $50,000 in the next lot of Sec Checks challenging your *LOYALTY* to management, to David Miscavige, and tracking down your *EXTERNAL INFLUENCES*. After departure of Scientology Inc, one is far more comfortable in their human relationships.

@Karen,
Like your video and it is so true. When my husband died, I got a call from an IAS person who was on staff with us years before. She said that she felt so bad and how they had been good buds. She said she was close to my area (I was 2 hours away from an org) and wanted to come see how my kids and I were doing.
She stuck to me like glue all afternoon and evening, even going to the boy scout meeting and staying for dinner talking to me the whole time about Germany…not my husband or my welfare, but the welfare of the church. She came armed with all her materials and her goal was to get what little insurance money I had (word travels fast) by having me buy LifeTime memberships for all my kids! She kept getting phone calls from her senior where she would say “Yes sir, she has the viewpoint.” I agreed with her all night, but never gave her a dime. Finally, she left at 2:00am in unexpressed resentment. Scientology has ALWAYS been about the money, but at least the wacko money loans etc of the past were about buying bridge, not MEST.

Hi Mike,
I wanted to point out another potential side-effect to all this focus on status. WIthin the group, if an individual has obtained a “respected” status with the IAS or other fundraising activity, that individual’s intention, actions or behaviors are rarely inspected or criticized. This fits in perfectly with Kool-Aid drinkers, who have been groomed to “not look, but listen”. I know of three cases where high status “Scnists” were permitted to con and defraud other church members and got away with it with the cloak of “status”. Donating to the IAS was just the price of doing business, but it was worth it since it gave them easy access to their mark.
Think about it, a con man (or woman) seeks the confidence of their mark. The mark must trust them enough to turn over their money. Normally the con man must devise elaborate schemes to win the confidence, but within the RCS all one has to do is pony up and you have instant credibility. This is a con man’s paradise. Because all the mark can see is “status” and readily will believe what they are told. “Gosh, a Patron Excalibur would never lie to me…” Think again.
This also makes me wonder if the inherent criminal nature of the IAS actually attracts other criminal elements like this?
Recently we have seen a new ponzi scheme roll through the field. The main instigator pushed an obvious illegal get-rich-quick scheme and hundreds queued up to give him their money. Why? He pushed all the right Scn buttons and had the “status” to back it up. As soon as the ponzi “peaked” he quietly disappeared from the scene.
I was curious if other readers have noticed a similar phenomena?

Not only the levels you posted, they made this shit up as they went along. It was hard to keep up with. We had a New Civilization Builder who every time went up a multiple of what seemed to be $100,000 they made up some new bullshit. The person stopped at Diamond Seal New Civilization Builder, sorry I don’t know what that amount was. But before that were things like Silver Cert or Seal, and Gold Seal. One of them was for over $1,100,000. Like I said, whatever shit they wanted to throw at the donor just to get, I mean extract, more money!
richard Lloyd-Roberts says
You know I see people complaining about DM having all this money this and all this money that. I don’t think that its about money. I think its far more sinister. With all this attention and time taken up on buildings the real plan is to stop ANYONE going spiritually free. Forget the money, its not important. The buildings are not important. What is important is the lack of delivery of any tech whatsoever as every local Scientologist is now unable to do any services through fear of being regged, fear of invalidation from NOT donating, ethics handlings for being CI to command intention and then ultimately being kicked out and declared due to asking any questions about this madness.
Its not the money. Thats a by product of the evil intention of DM’s not wanting anyone to go free. Get them wrapped up as MEST and introverted about status.

Jane Doe says
“Its not the money. Thats a by product of the evil intention of DM’s not wanting anyone to go free. Get them wrapped up as MEST and introverted about status.” Richard, this is so true! I have a friend on OT VII who is off now cuz the money well finally ran dry and they cant’ afford to pay for it anymore, but she told me, “don’t go into any orgs for any courses or any reason.” I asked “why?” She said, “It isn’t safe. They have regges and people that pounce on you the minute you step into the door.” What does this say about the church when an OT VII privately tells people not to step foot into an org? She continued by saying, “I’m afraid to go to any org because of all the pouncing and regging.” So if you figure she is one of many who feel that way, whether they admit it or not, the end result is no auditing occurring, no courses being done, and no auditors being made. If you impoverish them with IAS statuses and Idle Org donations, there is no money left with which to buy courses or auditing and their own spiritual salvation goes down the drain. That is the bigger picture than just the money and that is the heinous SP crime of the century.

Exactly Richard- LRH’s two most valuable targets were getting individuals audited to Clear and OT and get people trained in big numbers to be able to audit others to these states
.
Given the above DM had his two biggest targets-Stop the making of Clears and OT’s and heavily block the road to any new auditors being made and destroy if possible those already made.
What a simple operation for David Miscavige, read and study LRH and then do the opposite.
T. says
But what DM did not expect was the fact that people who left (and who will leave eventually in the future) would continue to practice Scientology outside of his grasp out in the wog world. He tried to squash it with threats and intimidation but failed. So his plan is failing.
Dan351 says
Something to add to the Scientology axioms;
The more it cost to be a Scientologist, the fewer Scientologists there will ever be.
The price started rising when LRH no longer ran the church. At the same time, numbers of Scientologists began to decline. Actual cost of being in the church is at an all time high and orgs are dead.
Perfect scheme to ensure the planet never goes clear.
Just Me says
Actually, the bit about pricing increases starting after LRH died isn’t true. In the mid 1970s (’76?) prices began increasing 5% monthly and continued that way for years and years. IMHO, that’s when it started to turn into a money machine. Don’t misunderstand — I’m all for financial stability. But in many ways, that was the end of “if it’s not fun, it’s not Scientology.” There was a continuing push to bring in people with more money to the advanced organizations, to move them quickly out of “regular orgs.” It didn’t take too long before the whole thing turned into a status-oriented organization. Levels of purity, of status, of respect.
By the late 1970s and early 1980s, the LA area was already divided into “those who are real Scientologists” (those who were running down to Flag regularly) and those who are “not real OTs” (those who weren’t contributing enough $$$). Auditing was pushed more than training. Those who had the most auditing were those with the most bucks. This happened in Los Angeles, which has always been status-conscious – money, beauty, fame, even cars, etc. — and Scientology in L.A. embraced that culture. Celebrity Centers speeded it up. Originally, “celebrities” were artists. Pretty soon, CCs turned into private Scientology clubs you could buy your way into. If you were “upstat” (meaning you were making the cash register ring), you were the ooh la la.
Sorry to type things that the old-timers already know. But this sorry story began a long, long time ago.
JM
shocked and awed says
I recall that 5% increases. It was outrageous. I suspect it was partly motivated a PUSH and sales gimmick to get the stats up with the price increases hanging over ones head. So one had to pay up NOW to lock in todays prices on courses and intensives. The church was well into transforming into a money maching way back then.
Ronnie Bell says
…the bit about pricing increases starting after LRH died isn’t true.
Dan351 didn’t actually say that. He said: The price started rising when LRH no longer ran the church.
I also remember when the monthly 5% price increases started. I was just coming into my own as a working adult, and was finally in a position to pay for my Bridge. The price increases changed all that for me. From my vantage point, it was like running to catch a train as it was pulling away from the station. It kept receding away from me faster and faster. Within twelve short months, Bridge prices had increased a whopping 80%.
And it didn’t stop there. As I recall, the price increases went on for years, which effectively put the Bridge out of reach for most working people forever.
Initially, the price increases made sense, as the org’s charges for services had remained stagnant for a long time, while inflation had continued to increase the cost of doing business across the whole economy. I don’t think anyone disagreed with the price increases at first, but after a certain point, they were inflated beyond all reason, and became punitive – even criminal. Who knows what LRH knew about all this, at the time? He was in the last years of his life, and was only connected to the organization by a slim thread of Sea Org terminals. I personally think he would have strongly disapproved, had he known about it.
jewel says
Yes, price increases started under LRH watch for sure. I remember as I was a staffer then.
Chuck Beatty says
They better not use the phrase “civilization changer” since LRH said that’s what he was.
This irreligious accumulation of wealth is going to backfire, if they don’t actually put this money to some sort of public religious like help to society.
T. says
I was thinking the same thing too, about how the accumulation of all this wealth is going to backfire, as there is NO proof whatsoever that the church actually does anything more than buy up buildings. Yeah, if there is a disaster a bunch of yellow t-shirts show up with a bunch of TWTH handouts which is very nice but people need FOOD AND WATER AND CLOTHING, ECT. They do nothing other than that that I can see.
With all the recent trouble the church is in, PLUS the recent changes in the IRS (they are cracking down on thousands of so called “non profit organizations” and have revoked their status) I believe this is going to be a very bad year for Corporate Scientology. Especially since their legal tricks do not seen to be working anymore.
uncover says
This is really not a new practice. Ever heard about the so called “letters of indulgence” ?:
“With a letter of indulgence the pope pronounced to the believer the remission of sins in the hereafter. From the selling of these letters the church drew a high income. After the invention of the printing press, indulgence letters were printed in large numbers.”

DM is definitely a squirrel but he is for sure making a hell of a lot of money. This is mind boggling. This guy is sitting on a huge pile of tax exempt cash and with the ideal org strategy in 1 week pulls in more money than the total GI of the entire mission network. Amazing.

The New Haven Idle Org is truly that: idle. The only portion of the property used for the church is the parking lot. I got caught taking pictures (two people arrived within minutes) at the empty building. When they asked what I was doing, I told them the property was in foreclosure (it was) and that it might be a good investment if it went on the auction block. They either didn’t know about the foreclosure or pretended not to know. That was over a year ago. They have resolved the foreclosure but there are still no renovations started ant the current space is empty.
Sea Org Sucks says
Have to kind of disagree about the whales having ethics protection. Church staff will claim that when it comes to upstat public, they just throw out any & all KR’s. This is definitely not true as we’ve seen many dozens of upstat publics who’ve contributed hundreds of thousands of dollars each & still have gotten themselves declared for the most minor of infractions and even innocuous questions.
If a whale dares criticize His Unholliness David Miscavige, that poor SOB will find themselves persecuted & vilified & 3rd partied the world over, declared SP on the spot That happened most notably to the Garcias, Schippers & dozens more, and even though they all contributed insane amounts of cash they were never allowed to question DM or management or to even question any Church fundraising effort, etc. I’ve even seen people get declared for just suggesting that the Church implement democratic standards in management like most other religious institutions so that power is spread out than just concentrated in one man.
That’s been true since the infamous Mission Holders Conference where the new Sea Org Int execs royally screwed over the Mission holders, crippling the missions network & purged hundreds of upstat, in-ethics Scientologists. So this BS is nothing new.
What I do find disgusting is that even though these people have donated millions of dollars altogether, once they were declared the Church refused to hand them a single penny back in exchange and even going so far as to omit their names from the donor lists & org plaques. That’s criminal.
The Church can go berzerk in declaring everyone for all care, but refusing to refund any donations is illegal & should be grounds for revocation of their tax-exemption.

The “Ideal Scientologist“: Always upgrading his status, no matter how and from where to get the money; getting presented as the model for the other “losers”, who cannot manage to bring in the dough; under surveillance, self-censoring – and getting interrogated, blacklisted and ostracized when objecting.
The statuses read like a parody. And the impudence to entitle such even as “humanitarian”!
So what is missing is the status of “Ideal Humanitarian” – probably reserved for DM himself ( I just get the picture of the medaled TC bestowing this tile to his BFF).
SILVIA says
And sooner or later this sham will blow up- aren´t they supposed to have “special sittings” at the events? With all these status you have now rows and rows and rows for all these duped people and, unfortunately, those who donated 750,000 or less will be at the very, very back rows…maybe it will dawn on them that it was not worthy to spend all your money just to get a status and a seat during the events which ended being the last one of the rows…

Silvia I believe the above is just one of the axioms DM and the IAS plays off of. The vast majority of the folks giving these kinds of hugh donations really want and believe they are contributing to changing this culture. They are operating at this high level axiom or so they believe. The level of betrayal by DM is unimaginable high.
I have a friend who I got into Scientology back in 1982. He is now running HCO in one of the new Ideal Orgs. He was always quite frugal with his money but confided in me that he really wanted to come back and to see his Org still running and to be able to say to himself, “I helped put that there!’ I know for sure he contributed more than $ 50,000 to his Org. He wanted to be able to say,” I created an effect on this culture!”.

Here’s a comment about lieing and fleecing by the writer Seth Godin:
It’s Thomas Midgeley day
Today would be his 124th birthday. A fine occasion to think about the effects of industrialization, and what happens when short-term profit-taking meets marketing.
Midgeley is responsible for millions of deaths. Not directly, of course, but by, “just doing his job,” and then pushing hard to market ideas he knew weren’t true—so he and his bosses could turn a profit.
His first mistake began when he figured out that adding lead to gasoline appeared to make cars perform better. At the time, two things were widely known by chemists: 1. Adding grain alcohol to gasoline dramatically increases octane and performance, and 2. Ingesting or sniffing lead can lead to serious injury, brain damage and death.
The problem for those that wanted to be in the gasoline business was that grain alcohol wasn’t cheap, and the idea couldn’t be patented. As a result, the search was on for a process that could be protected, that was cheaper and that could open the door for market dominance. If you own the patent on the cheap and easy way to make cars run quieter (and no one notices the brain damage and the deaths) then you can corner the market in a fast-growing profitable industry…
As soon as the lead started being used, people began dying. Factory workers would drop dead, right there in the plant. Even Thomas himself contracted lead poisoning. Later, at a press conference where he tried to demonstrate the safety of the gasoline, he washed his hands in it and sniffed it… even though he knew it was already killing people. That brief exposure was sufficient to require six months off the job for him to recover his health.
Does this sound familiar? An entrenched industry needs the public and its governments to ignore what they’re doing so they can defend their status quo and extract the maximum value from their assets. They sow seeds of doubt, and remind themselves (and us) of the profts made and the money saved.
And we give them a pass. Because it’s their job, or because it’s our job, or because our culture has created a dividing line between individuals who create negative impacts and organizations that do.
People who just might, in other circumstances, stand up and speak up, decide to quietly stand by, or worse, actively lie as they engage in PR campaigns aimed at belittling or undermining those that are brave enough to point out just how damaging the status quo is.
It took sixty years for leaded gas to be banned in my country, and worse, it’s still used in many places that can ill afford to deal with its effects.
After leaded gasoline, Midgeley did it again, this time with CFCs, responsible for a gaping hole in the ozone layer. He probably didn’t know the effects in advance this time, but yes, the industry fought hard to maintain the status quo for years once the damage was widely known. It’s going to take at least a millenium to clean that up.
We might consider erecting a statue of him in every lobbyist’s office, a reminder to all of us that we’re ultimately responsible for what we make, that spinning to defend the status quo hurts all of us, and most of all, that we have to balance the undeniable benefits of progress, innovation and industry with the costs to all concerned. Scaling has impact, so let’s scale the things that work. No, nothing is perfect, but yes, some things are better than others.
I can’t imagine a better person as the symbol of a day that’s not about honoring or celebrating, but could be about vigilance, candor and outspokenness instead.
Copper Rods says
Status these days has become a shallow substitute for doing actual Scientology. Some day these status-seekers are going to wake up… and smell the concrete.
Regarding the huge push for donations for Portland, I’ve known an Org to receive a “substantial grant from management” and this acted as a kick-start for the exhausted public that after giving their shirts off of their backs so a building could be bought, found themselves being regged once again for the renos. Well, it was more like a kick in the groin. But at some point this “grant” has to be repaid, because in the kingdom of Miscaviland no “grant” is ever really a grant, just a loan; and no world-saving humanitarian campaign is ever really anything other than an illusion.
And what better time to re-pay the “grant” than just before the highly anticipated grand opening of the org?
“C’mon! All shoulders to the wheel! We need to clear Portland! We need you help because you are OT! Just a few more million! Your eternity and that of your children’s children is at stake!”
It’s impressive to see a Jeremy & Hailley Arezzini on the list posted above, who in just one week donated well over $500,000. Sadly, Jeremy, while Clear has not done much else (http://www.truthaboutscientology.com/stats/by-name/j/jeremy-arezzini.html).

Whatever it is named. It is just a phoney title for a non existant “status” that was never mentioned, hinted about, nor referenced in any LRH writings. Not that LRH is the source of everything, but he is used by the church as the author of its scriptures. The titles remind me of the keeper of the royal footstool, the royal toilet paper handler, etc.
I have no issue with anyone if they wish to buy a “title” for a tidy sum of money. Just don’t call it scientology. Call it what it is – a scram. Of course, with the added benefit of you have been granted special indulgences by the POB. I am so over the fact that if grown adults, trained auditors and OTs wish to spend their money and their children’s money – so be it. Tis karma that will bite them in the ass. Someday many of these people will have to confront the fact that they were sold warm piss and told it was fine beer. When those that were duped WTFU we may see some fireworks. Well actually I did just think of something. An old friend and I used to comment (complain) about the IAS back in the early days, his name is Forrest, and we observed and agreed all the money goes in the same pot more or less, eventually, and certainly for the same cause, clearing the planet. So why would you give your hard earned money to the IAS with no exchange in lieu of your own Bridge? I could never think with that, and consequently pissed off many an IAS Reg and FSM, even on the ship they eventually left me alone.
Now I get it. STATUS !! Holy shamwow, very well laid out and a correct indication after all these years.

Who needs actual delivery and improved condidtions in life for the greatest number of people and dynamics when you have such a nifty little racket going?

Well I would guess that like everything in the Toxic Tosser’s sphere things aren’t quite what they seem. I would like to know on the above list how much is new or recent money – I suspect not that much. I was announced and re-announced as an IAS sponsor several times when it suited.
Having said that, it is still disappointing in the extreme that there are still so many folk who are so oblivious to the facts and continue propping up the fraud. And lets not forget, but for a tiny minority on that list, they can’t afford it. Their “donations” are ultimately coming in the form of over-charging their chiropractic clients, or creative accounting in their businesses – someone, somewhere, is getting ripped off to pay these monies. The Narconon fraud charges show that there no limits the criminality will go to to feed Miscavige’s money hunger.

F***!
This is just horrible.
Truly horrible. The church is gone, and in its place is a money starved monster that just sucks the blood out of its parishioners.

For people to donate this kind of money when information about Scientology and the IAS – and its relentless fraud and criminality is absolutely mind boggling! Responsibility includes observing. Where on earth do they see Scientology working?
